The flax plant is used to produce linen. Initially, the stems were used for basket weaving long before the fibre was used to make textiles. Cultivation of the flax plant has been widespread in Europe, The Middle East and Africa. The ancient Egyptians used it to dress if they could afford it. Linen had a resurgence in the 1990s as people began to take more care about the ecological impact of textiles and clothes. Moreover, linen is very easy to grow, launder and wear. Also, it is durable and resilient to mould – if it is stored clean and dry and is breathable.

Sammi has since moved back to England but thankfully still makes these beautiful linen pieces. Embroidered Garden Peter Pan Collar Dress – Son de flor A classic dress with an extra special embroidered collar for the festive season. Also available in black. Son de Flor is a Lithuanian brand with a team of 14, and they also outsource to small family-owned companies. Priced at £250.79 and sent out with non-plastic packaging.
Blue Naive New Autumn Dress – Linen By Blue NaiveI love the design of this dress because it cinches in at the waist, which is quite unusual for a linen dress. Karolina makes the dresses in Lithuania using OEKO-TEX certified linen from Lithuania. Sizes are from UK6 to UK16, but she can also produce a dress according to measurements. Priced at £84.24 with a choice of 22 colours!
Linen Wrap Dress – Simply GreyThis one caught my eye because it looks great worn as a dress or a light jacket. And it has pockets! Made from 100% soft linen in Slovakia in sizes XS to XL. This dress is priced at €95 and comes in 29 colours. The sample colours of the dresses look like ice cream cones on the website, worth a look!
Lace Trimmed Linen Dress – My French Linen HouseThe lace trim on this dress is so pretty, it reminds me of a petticoat sticking out from underneath. The loose style is easy to wear and fit your thermals underneath. The dress is handmade in France and can be made to your measurements. The colours are warm white and natural linen thus it would be great for spring/summer too.
Long Sleeve Dress – The Prancing HareA great layering piece for winter, this dress could easily be worn in all seasons. The big pockets at the front of the dress are a winner. The dresses are cut and sewn to order sizes small to extra large and custom orders are encouraged. There are two beautiful 100% linen colours to choose from, this one is sage, both are priced at £150 with free worldwide delivery.
Midnight Blue Loose Dress – Yaya & PonyA handmade oversized smock dress from a small seller in the UK. It’s made with mid-weight Lithuanian linen. I love the deep blue navy blue and the side pockets! The sizing comes in small to XXL and it’s priced at £132.50.
The Little Black Dress – PavietraAn option for those festive parties! It would also look great in the summer too. With twisted straps and a belt that can be tied however you wish. It has pockets as do most of these dresses. Perfect for dancing the night away. Available in all sizes and priced at £100.20.
Bungalow Dress – Old Town Made slowly in the Old Town workshop in Norfolk. This dress is linen, but they also have denim and drill fabrics available. Interestingly the design is inspired by a dress found in a broom cupboard of a pub. Therefore it has a delightfully retro feel about it. Sizes are small to extra large, and the linen variation is £90.
Winter Rio Dress – Terry MaceyA beautiful dark green winter linen dress from the latest collection from Terry Macey. They make the clothes in a workshop in Glastonbury in England. It is possible to visit and try on their clothes if you are in the area. This dress costs £335.
Embroidered Dress – OdaLuxI love embroidered linen, I’m surprised it’s not more common. This pretty dress is hand embroidered and comes in all different colours. It’s made from 100% natural linen in Lithuania. Available in a wide range of sizes and is priced at £59.86.
Ann Grace Linen Dress – Mises En ScèneThis dress makes me think of Wuthering Heights, both the TV adaptations and the Kate Bush song! The imagery on the website is so pretty, and this dress is a favourite. It has pockets and is available in four colours. Sizing is XS to L, priced at €175 and made in France. It’s worth pointing out that the website is in French!
Mabel Navy Fox – PalavaA lovely winter weight linen dress that would also be great for layering. The dress has pockets and comes with a belt that you can tie loose or tight depending on your preference. Palava produces their dresses in a family-run factory outside London in England. They have also recently started to use plastic-free packaging. The Mabel dress costs £130; the sizing is S to XXL.
Deep V Neck Linen Dress – Linen Old WaysA gorgeous design produced using medium or heavyweight linen for the winter. It is also available in lightweight linen as a beach coverup! The dress features pretty handmade wooden buttons. Sizing is from EU34 to EU46 although you can give your measurements for a better fit. Priced at £283.76.
Linen Smock Dress Osaka – Not Perfect LinenAn oversized smock dress in a heavy winter Oeko-Tex certified 100 % European linen. Not Perfect Linen is a family-run brand who are based in Lithuania. Sizing is S/M and M/L with five different colours to choose from. Priced at £86.02.
Rose Dress – Mantaikotai A belted midi dress with long sleeves and pockets. It’s handmade from Lithuanian linen in sizes up to 3XL. They do custom made clothes too so you can give them your measurements. It comes in all different colours and is priced at £92.22.
Beige Linen Dress – OffOn Generally speaking, the simplest designs are often the best, especially when it comes to linen. This dress comes with pockets and long sleeves, although Off On can alter the sleeve length. In any event, there are so many different colours to choose from I lost count! Made in Lithuania from locally manufactured linen. Sizes XS to XL and priced at £103.75.
