TARTAN AND TWEED
Edinburgh is a unique and eccentric city with a vast and extensive history. There are all different types of people with a fabulous sense of style, so I was excited to check out the local vintage shops. Edinburgh has a lot of secondhand and vintage; there are charity shops with cool window displays everywhere where I’m sure a bargain can be found. I focused on the dedicated vintage shops in Edinburgh – and I wasn’t disappointed!
Edinburgh is great for thrifting. It is hard to walk down a shopping street without coming across a charity or secondhand shop. There are many different clothing styles and budgets to suit everyone.
These are my five favourite vintage shops in Edinburgh. And I’ve added a new one on the end of the list which I’ve yet to frequent! The online shop is lovely, though, and they offer worldwide delivery, so it’s on my list of online vintage shops to browse through. Happy shopping!
First up is W.Armstrong & Son. They have three shops in Edinburgh, I visited the Grassmarket Flagship Store. It has a massive selection of vintage women and menswear. The shop opens up into different rooms and is almost too overwhelming at first. Although the clothes are well organised, there is a lot of it. If I lived in Edinburgh I would be forever rummaging in here. They also sell clothing online from their website. 81-83 Grassmarket, Edinburgh.
Herman Brown was a delight to visit. A beautifully curated selection of women’s and menswear, along with accessories. The shop is welcoming and nicely laid out and it is obvious the clothing has been picked out by someone with a genuine love for vintage. I bought a tweed skirt, which is in immaculate condition. Carnivàle Vintage is the place to go in Edinburgh for the perfect vintage dress. It is a small boutique with the most beautiful selection of 1940s to 1970s womenswear. There is a good selection of menswear, too, but to be honest, I couldn’t see past the dresses. I tried on a 50s-style white cotton dress, and the arms were too tight. I’m still getting over it now! 51 Bread Street, Edinburgh. Stop off at Lovecrumbs for coffee and cake just along the road, too!
Those Were The Days. Two shops right next door to each other, in what is one of the prettiest shopping streets in Edinburgh – Stockbridge area. The first is womenswear from 1920 to 1990s and the second is a vintage bridal boutique. Unfortunately, the shop was closed for a bridal appointment. My only option was to face press against the window – the poor bride, she looked stunning in her dress though. They also sell a selection of their clothing online. Just along the street from Those Were The Days is Elaine’s Vintage. It is small and unassuming, with a selection of curated vintage clothing. It is well worth a look. 55 St. Stephen Street, Edinburgh.
For an added bonus, there is a lovely little independent bookshop called Golden Hare Bookshop on the same street as Those Were The Days and Elaine’s Vintage. (Image below.) It is Perfect for the kiddies, too, with a little space at the back for them. 68 St. Stephen St, Edinburgh.
Since visiting Edinburgh, I’ve come across Torn Vintage. They have a great curated selection of women’s clothes online and have since opened a beautiful shop in the Grassmarket area at 11 West Port, Edinburgh. I don’t plan to visit Edinburgh soon, but when I do, I’ll pop in for a visit. In the meantime, the online shop is worth a look, with clothing, jewellery and even reworked scrunchies.
