The September Edit
September is such a good month.
There is still warm sunshine leftover from summer, and it’s combined with a back to school feeling. I really feel the shift of the seasons and like to use it to recreate a different emotion, both in my work and home life. I decorate my home with a few more blankets, I take out candles and light them in the evenings. And spend more time drinking tea, while my autumn capsule wardrobe starts to make an appearance.
One of my goals is to take more notice of the seasons and even break it down further to take more note of each passing month. I’ve collated a few things that are helping with that this autumn.
I change my jewellery quite a lot throughout the year. Summer is about bright and cheerful whereas September is more about the understated – for example, dainty gold necklaces layered together. Jewellery is such a personal style statement, but I like something like the gold necklace below for every day in Autumn. After the sticky sun cream of the summer, I’m happy to wear it every day without taking it off again. This particular one is from AURate, they have a beautiful selection of ethical jewellery. I’ve also been looking out some of my old pieces and finding they work really well in the Autumn too. I have a favourite tiny gold necklace from Wild Fawn that I wear on repeat in the colder months often layered with other gold necklaces.
My autumn capsule wardrobe is similar to summer and yet at the same time changes up quite a bit. And summer is my favourite season although autumn is my fave for dressing and clothes! The colour tones seem to change towards a warmer palette, and everything is more layered. I bring out my boots again, and it looks like a fresh start. Blazers aren’t a new thing, but they come into their own in autumn. It’s the perfect cover-up for the beginning of the temperature plummet. Everlane knows how to produce a good blazer (pictured below) but check out second-hand shops too. One of my favourite ever blazer’s is from a vintage shop in Amsterdam which I’m wearing in the title photo.
A brilliant initiative from Oxfam to encourage people to shop preloved. I’ve made a little video to show all the clothing I own secondhand for Instagram tv. Oxfam is one of my favourite places to buy secondhand. I recently just found a pair of beautiful green suede boots that have hardly been worn. I’m looking forward to styling them up when the weather cools a bit more. Read more about Secondhand September here.
A simple candle can make a world of difference to the way a room feels in September. The nights are cooling down, and the warm light brightens everyone up. However, regular candles can be full of horrible chemicals. I prefer to buy beeswax candles from Etsy, often you can find locally handmade ones. They smell good enough to eat and last longer than regular candles too. Self Care Company do lovely soy wax candles in beautiful scents for a vegan option. Check organic candles for more candle recs.
Walking in the woods when the leaves start to fall is very grounding. I like to get up early and take the dogs out to appreciate the quiet. I’m usually wearing my organic leggings from Ognx, an old jumper and wishing that my jacket was just that little bit longer. (For reference, I bought a waterproof walking jacket a few years back. It’s a short style and every time I wear it I think about how it would be better if it were longer!)
There seems to be more time to enjoy email newsletters as the weather cools down. Maybe it’s because I’m more likely to be reading them indoors with less distractions. Some of my favourites at the moment are The French Press from Emily Stochl, The wheel Of The Year Letter from Folk and Field. And Conversations On Love from Red Editor Natasha Lunn.
