Don’t Email Me Deals On Christmas Day.

No To Shopping On Christmas Day

Christmas Day has passed by.

For anyone who had the sense to switch off their emails on the festive day, they would have missed out on a crazy amount of sale shopping emails. And good for them. The first ones started trickling in at 8 am in the morning.

Along with festive messages from family and friends, it seemed vulgar to be opening emails from random stores with 50% off flashing gifs and clickable buttons for goodness knows what. Instead of taking two minutes to switch off the emails, it became second nature to ignore them. Open them to get rid of the red notification sign and forget all about them, until the next one pops up.

The sale emails continued throughout the day. Sellers and brands desperate to entice more shoppers. Spending on Christmas Day was expected to exceed £1bn for the first time ever. After buying gifts for friends and family all December, consumers are being persuaded to buy for themselves from 8 am on Christmas Day.

And not to be a stick in the mud but…it is the old stock being sold off. The new stock is still being sold at full price. These flashy enticing emails are showcasing discounted old stock. With trends flashing by quicker than Mo Farah, is it sensible to buy something that will be out of date before the new year?

The festive season has become a consumerist holiday. There is no getting away from it. The build-up is stifling and out of control. Bricks and mortar shops are generally closed but brands are still able to get into our minds and pockets with the use of the internet.

For anyone who is on a tight budget, sales are a lifeline. And they can provide a chance to buy an investment piece that would otherwise be out of reach. In what used to be Boxing Day and January sales, is now all the time. A constant stream of offers and discounts of things we might need…… but probably not on Christmas morning.
