Light nights and new beginnings..
Oh thank goodness, spring is here at last! There are aspects of winter that are enjoyable but for the most part, I feel like I’m reborn when the weather starts to heat up. I’m typing this outside, the first chance I’ve had this year. Apart from a random insanely hot day in March. Often spring is the season where I feel like I really need to revamp my clothes. The point of a capsule wardrobe is to keep the number low, however, this does mean that the clothes can get worn out quicker or it can get boring wearing the same things. Never more so than after winter.
As I mentioned in my winter capsule revisit post, I’m only allowing myself a total of two new pieces each month. Last month I bought this cream silk blouse from an Etsy seller who just happened to live in Berlin. I find if I control the number of clothes I buy then I’m more likely to take time to research what I really want. I knew I wanted a silk blouse in a light colour and I wanted it to be secondhand.
I’ve got a good selection of tops that go with jeans, trousers and skirts here. The blue and white Breton has had so much wear the past few months that I actually might purchase one in another colour. I used to own a white Breton top although I had to get rid of a year or so ago as it started to look tatty. It’s a difficult balance between wanting clothes to last a long time in spite of the fact they are getting worn so much.
Last month I bought a pair of white organic cotton jeans from Weekday. They are the same style as the blue pair that I wear on constant rotation. Although I’ve only worn the white pair a few times as I’m worried they’ll get dirty! Since the weather is getting better I’ll make an effort to put them on more, I really like them worn with lighter colours.
I’ve kept lots of thicker knitwear out as most of my spring coats are light. And I was getting fed up of wearing the thick coats every day. In the event that it got too cold, I could easily take a coat out again. I’ve taken out my shoes and put away my heaviest boots until autumn again.
Skirts are a big part of my style, especially the midi. I get asked now and then where I buy them, namely I find them secondhand in Oxfam. Granted it can be a trawl to go through the website but I always find a gem. Generally, I will have a look on Pinterest for inspiration first and then search for specific styles. I might search for ‘silk skirt’ for example. This month I bought a blue midi skirt with a white leaf pattern. I know I’ll get so much wear out of it and it was around £8 from Oxfam. It’s a little longer than the ones I have already and really was such a bargain!
I bought the dress in the middle in New York last year and still haven’t worn it. To be fair, it is a thin fabric and isn’t lined so it will probably work better in the summer. I will layer it up towards the end of the spring season and hopefully continue to wear it through summer.
I’m still looking for a couple more pieces to round off this spring capsule wardrobe. Instead of trying to get everything sorted at the start of the season, I’m enjoying adding bits and pieces throughout each month. Obviously, if I don’t need anything then I won’t buy it however I’m currently pondering another blazer. Everlane has a beautiful navy blue light one for spring-summer that I think would work well with my wardrobe. I’ve been thinking of getting another pair of shoes, I walk a lot so they have to be super comfortable though. And I’d also like a few more tees for simple styling when the weather gets warmer.
