The Salvage Heart – Beautiful Up-cycled Earrings

The Salvage Heart

The Salvage Heart is everything I look for in a sustainable brand.

The earrings are handmade by artist Nadia Kuhl in Manitoba, Canada. She sources used leather that would otherwise go to landfill and creates something truly special. Earrings from The Salvage Heart are soft and light as a feather. They are made in the most gorgeous colour combinations. My favourite pair is a dark navy blue which has a brown strip that flashes through every so often. See below!

I caught up with Nadia to find out more about The Salvage Heart and to find out her top sustainability tips. The images are all of me but if you pop onto Nadia’s instagram you can see her too! All links at the bottom of the page.

What motivated you to start The Salvage Heart?

I have a deep love for taking something old and making it into something new. I love to renovate old homes, up-cycle denim in all forms and hunting for classic, unique and vintage clothes is a massive part of what inspires my creative process.

Where do you find the inspiration for your designs?

Initially I started designing to suit my own needs and wants:) I love wearing long fringe earrings but was looking for something specific and just started creating and building and then The Salvage Heart was born!

Describe yourself in 3 words!

Resourceful, creative, capable!!

Where do you source the materials for your creations?

I am always on the look out for creative materials to use in my work, one of my goals is to clothe myself and my family in all thrifted and vintage clothing, so I am able to hunt for materials along the way! I also have friends who love what I do and keep their eyes peeled for me!!

What drives your passion for sustainability?

My desire for promoting and living a sustainable life style is driven by my passion for leaving a better world for my children. I want them to learn how to vote with their dollars and make informed decisions about where their food and clothes come from. I believe that it is so important to know where your dollars are going, and supporting local businesses, buying secondhand and making a conscious decision to consume less falls inline with this belief!!

What are your top tips for others trying to lead sustainable lives?

Hmmmm, top 5 tips would be…

  1. Wash your plastic!!! There are so many ways to reuse your single use plastic, yoghurt, sour cream and cottage cheese containers can all be reused, bread bags can be rinsed for use as a produce bag at the grocery store – and grab yourself a metal straw to keep in your bag!!
  2. Buy Thrift!! Choosing to purchase pre-loved clothes for yourself makes a massive difference! Keeping clothes out of the land fill is an important step to making a change and making a real difference!!
  3. Buy Handmade & Up-cycled! Supporting a local handmade business, particularly one that builds and creates using up-cycled, preloved and salvaged materials is an amazing way to support your local economies and vote with your dollars!!
  4. Grow some food! Even if it is a small endeavour like a potted tomato plant or some back stoop herbs, getting your hands in the dirt and biting into something homegrown is good for the environment and good for the soul!!!
  5. Shop at a local farmers market! Meet some of your local producers, ask about the process behind what they grow, know who raises & grows your meat & veggies! Buying locally grown and raised honey, meat, veggies, dairy etc does cost more but is amazing and effective way to be heard as a consumer while supporting a real human business owner or farmer!

What are the future plans for you and The Salvage Heart?

I am currently expanding into also selling the unique and vintage items that I have been collecting, along with creating up-cycled t-shirts and thrifted/vintage denim:) yay!!
