Winter Capsule Wardrobe – Revisited

How did my capsule wardrobe rate over the winter?

The frost is lifting, the sky is brightening and that familiar feeling of too many layers of clothing has arrived. The too many clothes situation is especially applicable to anyone who has to take an underground train. Who knew it was so warm underground?! Before I swap out my clothes for spring I always take a moment to consider how the winter capsule has worked out. In terms of how the clothes worked together, how many of them I wore and what I will do differently next time. If you want to see all the pieces in my capsule you can find them here.

The Good Points

  1. The winter has been unseasonably warm and I was able to dress for that. At least until I moved house – see the not so good points below. I packed up all my lighter coats in storage, but I would have been fine if I had my full wardrobe with me!
  2. This winter, I had a good selection of tops and jumpers. I experimented a bit more with layering them up too.

The Not So Good

  1. The past few months have been erratic and disorganised. If you follow my posts you may already know that I recently moved to Berlin. Many of my clothes went into storage until we found a permanent home. I packed a pared-down wardrobe for our first month in Berlin so didn’t actually use a lot of the pieces from my capsule.
  2. The selection of trousers was lacking in my winter capsule wardrobe. Can anyone tell me why I thought cropped jeans was a good idea in winter? I bought two new pairs towards in the past month to compensate for my poor planning. They are made of organic cotton, fit like a glove and I’ve worn them on repeat since I bought them. Note for next year: I don’t like cold legs.

After an adventurous few months, it is pleasing to look forward to a calmer springtime. Sorting out proper storage is near the top of my list. What to do with all those winter coats now I don’t have an extra wardrobe downstairs?!

Seriously though, I’ve had a few thoughts about changing up my capsule wardrobe process. One idea is to limit new purchases to two per month. As an alternative to buying new pieces at the start of the season, taking time throughout each month to choose more carefully. Taking the time to research each piece before I buy should lessen any mistakes and ensure my clothes last for many years.
